Adam Oliver had the pleasure of moderating an insightful panel discussion as part of our "CPO professional development and insights workstream" at Nexus, kindly hosted by our friends at MS Amlin at their stunning facility in the Leadenhall building.
Our fantastic line-up of panellists shared their unfiltered insights and reflections on their experience of transitioning from "conventional" CHRO positions into very different executive careers; Chief Executive, Senior iNED, Operating Partner and PortCo Talent and HR Leader.
A huge "thank you" to our panellists;
🔷 Thomas Heier - CEO of Wagamama
🔷 Tim Pointer - Operating Partner at Three Hills
🔷 Claire John - Head of Portfolio Talent and HR at Hg
🔷 Denise Collis - previously CPO at 3i Group plc and BUPA, currently SID and RemCo Chair at SThreePLC and NED and Remco Chair at Smiths News PLC
During the session Adam shared with this group his humble opinion that whilst the corporate landscape for senior HR Leaders is changing for the better with regards to increased board representation, we - 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘙 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 - repeatedly fail to position HR as the feeder into broader, commercial leadership positions outside of our own functions when compared to our peers in the COO, CFO, CRO and CMO seats.
As the scope of the CHRO role becomes increasingly broad there are more commercial levers to pull than ever before to leverage into bigger, influential opportunities, but this doesn't happen as frequently as it should. This discussion really helped to frame the commercial value and influence that HR can bring to an organisation using Private Equity as the principle case study.
Thank you everyone for such an insightful discussion, if you would like to attend a future Nexus event please get in touch using the contact us page.
